Hi fellows, I'm facing some performance issues on my farm (4.5 RO3 / W2K3 SP2) in the past months and I suspect one or more HP-drivers to be the reason. Therefore I am about to clean-up the drivers on my TS and printservers.

Like everywhere printing is a big topic also in my farm. All in all I have 150 TS publishing a desktop, 16 printservers publishing 1600 printers which are used by approx. On the TSE there are approx. 280 different drivers installed.

I know, it's a mess. At the moment I am about to review this mess in order to get rid of unused drivers resp. To homogenize the driver environment across the printservers/TSE I saw that a lot of my HP Laserjet printers are running on MS native drivers (unidrv.dll).

However, according to the HP/Ctx compatibility list I ought to use HP drivers in certain versions instead. What should I do - use the MS-drivers or switch to the HP-version? Actually the Laserjets are mostly running fine but I'm not sure if the proper HP-drivers maybe help to get rid of the performance-issues. On the other hand I'm afraid lots of different HP-drivers could cause other problems because of files they use in common. I think of dll-version-conflicts and so on. How do you handle this? My local IT-guys are spoiled.

I once tried to implement the HP-UPD but they were missing some options then. I can understand that you have problems. All I can say is that you must try and get the number of drivers down. With 342 drivers on the servers you are bound to have issues. It may take a lot of time and work but you should try to make you company standardize on a few printers if possible. Hp Compaq 8100 Elite Motherboard Manual. Another way is to look into other third party print management products for Citrix environments.

I am talking about products like Thinprint (www.thinprint.com) or Screwdriver (). I don't have any experience with either of them so I cannot give you any tips but it may be worth wile to evaluate. There may also be other similar products.

Regards /Mats. You have up to 6 different drivers for the same model of printer. Rationalise this list! Only 1 driver per model. Test every printer driver reminaing with the Citrix StressPrinters program. Search for it on the Citrix web site.

If you can't find drivers that can pass StressPrinters just use a HP LaserJet 4 driver. You will lose functionality but you will be able to print. Remember: Native printer drivers are the work of the Devil make to torment Citrix admins. Some have very poor multi-threaded performance.

Host based drivers and sucide for a Citrix server spooler. If you have a printer that requires a host based driver try a HP LaserJet 4 driver which may work or tell them it is not happening on your Citrix servers. If a printer can't print a PCL or PostScript job get rid of it. If you use PostScript drivers you will have less issues printing PDF files. (A PDF file is just a PostScript file with some add ons.) There is also a major problem of different versions of.dll files overwriting earlier versions and breaking the driver for the older printer. Where possible use the driver that came on the Windows server CD, not a 3rd party driver. Even if this means providing a driver for a similar but compatible printer.
