I recently purchased a HP Pavilion g6 laptop running Windows 8. I want to either obtain the Windows 8 ISO or make some kind of recovery disk that would allow me to restore the system if things go w.

The short version is that I have an HP Pavilion G7 that is unable to boot from recovery media (USB or recovery DVD from HP). Here's the story: The battery ran out, and it shut down recently. After plugging it back in it wouldn't boot up; just went to the HP screen with the spinning ring of dots and did nothing. I turned it off, tried again, and it brought up the 'Preparing Automatic Repair' message, but again did nothing after that (let it run for about 10 minutes).

That worked with no problems. (I used, if that's important) Then I tried the boot menu to access the recovery partition; no luck. I made a recovery drive from another laptop with windows 8 and got the same HP screen with no activity. I ordered the recovery discs from HP and I get a message saying 'Press any key to boot from CD/DVD', but then it goes to my old friend, the HP screen and does nothing. I let it go until the DVD drive powered down and the light stopped blinking. I've tried everything listed in to get the correct BIOS settings.

Secure boot is turned off, the boot order is correct, I tried with legacy boot enabled and disabled, and I tried clearing the secure boot keys. Everything fails at the same place. I have a few ideas to try next, but I'm not sure if they are reasonable or will have a chance of working. First is to install Ubuntu (since that USB works), then use the recovery media to install windows 8 again. My main concern there is that I only have recovery discs, and I will have to buy a new version of windows.

The second idea is to pull the HDD and put it into my desktop to try running recovery with that system. It seems like it might be a BIOS problem since it never gets to any windows screens. I used a bootable thumb drive with Ubuntu (see the link I posted above) and ran it without installing. From there I formatted the HDD and recovery partition (complete overwrite option, just to be sure), and then rebooted with the recovery dvd in the drive.

After that windows loaded just fine. So to answer the question I posed: yes, you can use the recovery discs to reload windows on a completely formatted drive. Edit: I also used the Ubuntu drive to run a HDD check. There were 2 sectors with errors, but no damage to the actual drive.
